Chapter 7 – Personal Development

One of the most important aspects of achieving success as a loss prevention professional is understanding the importance of personal development. Consider that personal development is the ongoing, intentional process of assessing one’s abilities, refining one’s values, and building practical skills to improve one’s life, enhance self-awareness, and reach one’s full potential. Without it, there is no personal growth, which is an essential element for achieving one’s aspirations. Put simply, if you are not growing, you are not going anywhere.

It is commonly held that there are five areas of personal development or growth – mental, emotional, physical, social, and spiritual. Everyone has growth areas, which can be determined in a number of ways. The primary way to identify growth areas is to simply ask for feedback from trusted friends, peers, or managers. Consulting with others concerning one’s growth areas can reveal potential that could not otherwise be understood. Most people are not capable of seeing and identifying growth opportunities on their own.

There are several ways to approach a personal growth strategy. There are countless books, videos, seminars, and conferences dedicated to this very thing and for good reason: because personal development is essential for achieving success in virtually every aspect of personal and professional life. Many of these resources can be found online, at sites such as: becomingbetter.org or positivepsychology.com, or skillsyouneed.com, to name just a few. Of course, there are many more. Truth is, “if you don’t know you can’t grow”, so it is profoundly important to identify one’s growth areas and to seek out helpful resources to develop a comprehensive personal development strategy.
